Consultant becomes marathoner

Working as business consultant, and working under enormous pressure, about three years ago, after conventional check-up whose results proved that something wrong with me: initial symptoms of hypertension, cirrhosis and hyperlipidemia. From that moment, I decided that measure must be taken to improve health and wellbeing.

Of all exercise, I chose running and yoga, because it is simple and graceful. I bought running shores and cloth. At beginning, I can just ran 3K or 5K, and persist in training myself to run farther and farther. No matter where did I went for business trip, I bought myself with necessary equipment for running. From that time, running became inseparable part of my daily routine. I have ran in Tibet where altitude about 4000 meters, in Yunnan province and in remote area in Sichuan province. This year, I make great breakthrough in running. In October I finished my first marathon, and in November finished second marathon. After three years running, I became a marathoner.
Running profoundly change me both physiological and psychological. This year conventional check-up shows that initial symptoms of hypertension, cirrhosis and hyperlipidemia is gone, and my weight goes down from 78kg to 65kg. Most importantly, miracle manifested when I became a distance runner. Each time, when I pulled on my running cloth, running alone on road for more than 10K, I feel that I find a place to meditate, to ponder, to retreat and refreshed. The lonely hours of distant running provided room for me to ponder over a problem faced me, to reach state similar to yoga meditation. After running, creative idea comes out of nowhere which make my work easier.
I read through Running and Being by Dr. George. Sheehan when I finished second marathon. In his book it says: ‘He runs because he has to. Because in being a runner, in moving through pain in pain, imposing stress upon stress, in eliminating all but the necessities of life in imposing stress upon stress, in eliminating all but the necessities of life, he is fulfilling himself and becoming the person he is.’ For me being a distant runner, is to tap my potentiality never used in my life, to reach a state not only physiological fitness but spiritually tranquil and steadfast, and eventually submit myself to something higher than pure materialistic existence to be judged.
